Orthodontics – Dental Braces

It's never too early or too late to want a beautiful smile and straight teeth. A beautiful smile is possible for everyone - adult or child! Orthodontic treatment is done for various reasons: to straighten crooked or misaligned teeth, to correct malocclusions, or to improve the appearance of your smile. There are conventional treatments, such as metallic or transparent braces, or the innovative Invisalign technology, which straightens the teeth without visible braces, clips or wires. Invisalign uses three-dimensional computer technology to sketch-out the entire treatment process from beginning to end. Using this plan, a series of custom-made, transparent and removable retainers (aligners) are manufactured. Each retainer in the series is worn for approximately two weeks up until the teeth gradually move to their final position. Discuss all the options with your dentist; he will know what is best for you!

Orthodontics

Orthodontics, also known as “wearing braces”, is a treatment that can be done at any age. Its main aim is to align your teeth, improving their appearance and performance.

When we talk about the positioning of teeth and the jaw, we’re talking about occlusion – or the alignment of the upper teeth with those below. When the upper teeth fail to align well with those below, we get what’s known as malocclusion. Missing, crooked, protruding or misaligned teeth can contribute to malocclusion, while habits like sucking one’s thumb or finger can negatively impact occlusion.

The goal of orthodontics is to align your teeth so that they work better (occlusion) and look their best. With the help of fixed or removable orthodontic appliances, we can realign teeth to their optimal position, simply by exerting a gentle pressure on them over a number of month or years.

Orthodontic treatment

Orthodontic treatment (wearing braces) will not only help enhance your smile, it promotes good oral health: teeth that are properly aligned are easier to brush and clean, and consequently less prone to decay.

Orthodontic braces

There are several kinds of braces, including:

  • Fixed braces: glued to the front of teeth, or more rarely to the inside surface
  • Invisible elastic aligners: this system emerged in the last couple of years and features clear removable elastics that help gradually align teeth. Because you can remove the elastics for both eating and oral hygiene, this option eliminates the dietary restrictions and cleaning difficulties commonly associated with braces.

No matter what age, there’s an orthodontic treatment to meet each patient’s needs. For more information, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
